Community: The Heart of Ottiya’s Beginning

From the Ottiya Magazine

This article is adapted from the first “Community” edition of Ottiya Magazine. While Ottiya has evolved since its early days, the values shared here—connection, creativity, and learning together—remain at the core of everything we do

Why Community Matters More Than Ever

In one of our earliest posts, a simple piece of string is used to form animals and a family—mother, father, and child—illustrating a quiet but powerful idea: we are all connected.

It’s a simple message, yet one that’s easy to forget.

For many of us living in large cities—from New York to Beijing—daily life moves fast. Streets are filled with traffic, new developments replace green spaces, and screens constantly compete for our attention. Even as we read, notifications buzz and tabs multiply.

Instead of feeling connected—to nature, to our neighbors, to one another—we often feel fragmented and isolated.

Busy, Connected, and Still Disconnected

We want to feel connected, yet many of us move through our days on autopilot.

We’re busy with work, overwhelmed by information, and pulled in countless directions at once. In this constant motion, it becomes harder to pause, reflect, and ask deeper questions:

  • What kind of world do we want to live in?
  • What values matter most to us?
  • How do we model reflection, kindness, and curiosity for our children?

When was the last time we truly slowed down—and invited kids to do the same?

Why Ottiya Began with “Community”

When we launched the very first issue of Ottiya Magazine, we chose community as our central theme for a reason.

We wanted to remind ourselves—and others—of:

  • the warmth of human connection
  • the importance of kindness and empathy
  • the richness of diversity in our neighborhoods and classrooms

From the beginning, Ottiya was never just about content. It was about creating spaces—physical and digital—where learning feels meaningful, creative, and human.

Learning as Connection

We hoped that Ottiya Magazine would feel like a pause from the noise of everyday life: a place to reflect, explore ideas, and reconnect—with ourselves, with each other, and with how children learn best. This belief continues in our reflection, What If Children’s Voices Were Taken Seriously?, where we explore how listening to children deepens connection and compassion in learning.

That same spirit also continues through Ottiya’s courses, songs, stories, and learning experiences for kids and families. Whether through language learning, coding, or creative play, we believe learning happens most powerfully in connection.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

This early reflection on community became the foundation for everything Ottiya would grow into. While our formats and offerings have evolved, the question we continue to ask remains the same:

How can we create learning experiences that help children—and the adults around them—feel more connected, curious, and alive?

Explore more from the Ottiya Magazine and discover how our early ideas continue to shape our work today.

Today, that same spirit lives on through Ottiya’s courses, songs, and stories—designed to help kids learn through creativity, connection, and play.
